Courses

Again one of Kenny’s favorite courses start to finish!  

Herron Lake is a motor free lake, one of the few left out there. It is very clean and clear, you will have a rectangle course straight out, across 30m and back in. 

Water temp has been in the 70s every year.

The bike is not only 100% closed to traffic, but it is fun and challenging - rolling to hilly at times. The perfect course for those looking for an exhilarating challenge. Communication is needed as it is a 3mi course, down and back equaling 6 miles. Three loops will complete the bike discipline and it is your responsibility to count laps. A fast downhill turn at the Transition Area end will require braking and handling and focus.

The run course is a part trail run, part pavement slightly rolling with a fast descent back down to the beach.  

The Gravel bike course is rolling to hilly as well, lightly traveled will be a two-loop affair before heading back into the park.  

Transition Area

Opens - 4:30pm 
No friends or family members allowed in the transition area for any reason. The race director and race officials will close the transition area 30-45 minutes before race start to ensure all athletes are at the starting area for mandatory course meeting and announcements. Once the transition area is closed, you will NOT be permitted back in before the race starts. Family/Friends will not be permitted in for any reason at any time throughout the event. 

Re-Opens
When the last cyclist is off the course and has headed out for the run. This time is variable and we will make announcements at the event when the transition area is ready to re-open. 

Any athletes removing gear from transition areas before the announcer or race director has officially opened the transition area will be DISQUALIFIED from the race! This pertains to all athletes of all distances. All athletes deserve a clear transition. 

In the event of inclement weather, it is recommended you have warm, dry clothing outside the transition area to put on following your finish due to other athletes still being on the bike course. 

Timing Chip
When you have completed the race, please do NOT enter the transition area wearing your timing chip. PLEASE remove your chip before re-entering the transition area and exiting again. This will cause a timing error. 

Racking
You must rack according to your race number, based on the sequence numbers placed at the end of each row. Please remember racks will hold 7 bikes racked with the seat tip on support bar. Please be courteous to fellow athletes to ensure there is space for 7 bikes on a rack. If there is not enough room for your bike on your designated rack, please see a 3D Team member and we will help. Please do not move another athletes bike or gear. 

Aid Station
Located at the run in/out chute with water and electrolyte replacement. 

Directional
Run In/Out and Bike In/Out chutes are clearly marked on the large structures at either end.  It is your responsibility to go the right direction while racing in the transition area.

TRANSITION AREA

Swim: 200m or 500m

New for all events will be a Time Trial swim start.  For safety reasons it is important we ensure we are doing all we can to alleviate stress at the start and turning at buoys.  A time trial start ensures everyone has a clear, stress-free swim.  You will SELF SEED according to your swimming ability, this is important to ensure you are not swam over or create congestion by seeding yourself faster than you can swim.  Don't be that athlete that creates a traffic jam.  Seed yourself appropriately and everyone will have a great time in the water. 

Each athlete will report their number to the timer before crossing the timing mats and entering the water.  Again your responsibility to report that number to the timer.   

Time trial starts: Sprint course athletes first, followed about 20 minutes later Super Sprint athletes.  

Starting on the beach, we will make a rectangle course for you straight out, across 30m, and back in. 

Lifeguards will be on the water for your safety. 

Sprint course will turn at the yellow buoys and head in. 

Water temps have typically been low 70s for this event every year. 

SWIM COURSE

Bike: 6mi, or 12mi ROAD or 10mi. GRAVEL

A great CLOSED rolling bike course! 

You will exit the Transition Area in the parking lot directly up the hill and follow the park road to the dead-end in the back of the park. This is a 6mi course,   2 laps for sprint athletes.  At the backside, you will not have a loop turnaround through a parking lot so you can keep your speed and focus. The front side turnaround is a fast short downhill after a short climb, this is what has become the "hot" corner,  spectators gather at this spot, you must slow when heading downhill to the turn. 

The entire course will be closed to all traffic. We will have cones down the middle ensuring you do not cross the middle line as this is a rolling, sweeping, fast and exhilarating course. After completing your 3rd lap, you will head down the hill back to the Transition Area.

The Gravel course will take you out McGinnis road to a great loop rolling and heavily wooded much of the way on both sides.  There are a few homes back there but it is a rolling to hilly course.  Super fun, you will complete two loops back there before you make your way back to the park.   Click here for Gravel bike course

BIKE COURSE

Run: 1.2mi. or 3mi

Exiting the Transition Area out the back end opposite of bike, you will follow the run chute back up the driveway that you entered and exited on the bike, up through the crowds watching the bike discipline and into woods on the trail. You will pop out on McGinnis road and head back to the park heading into the camping side for the 5k, turning around and heading back to the beach.  Again, slightly rolling, fun and fast. 

You will make the LEFT turn popping off the trail on the dirt road back down to the camping side of the park before flying down to the boat launch, along the beach to the finish line.  

RUN COURSE

Super Sprint and DU run 1

Aquabike

You will complete the Swim and Bike disciplines of the event. Following your Bike discipline, you will dismount your bike, cross the Bike In timing mats and place your bike back at your spot on the rack in the Transition Area.  You will then proceed across the Run Out timing mats and you are done! Your finish time will be when you cross the timing mats at that point.

DO NOT re-enter the transition area through Run In/Out or Bike In/Out. This will cause a timing error.  

Finisher Memento 
If the event offers a finisher’s memento, please proceed to the finish area to receive the item. Tell the support crew at the finish line you were in the aquabike race and they will hand you the finishers memento. 

You will keep your timing chip & strap on until all the bikes are off the course. Once we announce the transition is open, you may turn your chip & strap in at the designated collection point and retrieve your gear at that point.

Race Tips

Another big beach to use. The swim course is clear but outside of that not to far are weeds. If you have a road bike, I would opt for that here. Tri bikes or time trial bikes are not great for climbing, and not to say you are going to be doing large climbs, but the amount of rolling hills on the course would be better suited for a road bike. 

You need to have your gear switching mind set in place, what I mean by that is you want to keep your cadence and momentum up throughout the entire bike. If you are constantly trying to speed up, you are working a lot harder than you need to be. So constantly switch those gears to stay smooth, consistant and keep the momentum up. That may mean a lot of in and out of the saddle as well. This is important and something a lot of less experienced multi-sport athletes fail to do, especially on hilly courses. 

It is crucial you use the last mile of the bike to loosen your legs up. You need to pay attention to where that is on the bike course, get into a spinning gear where you are at 100 rpm’s or more for that mile. If you don’t do this that first mile to mile and half on the run, it can make you very tight and make for a less than comfortable start to your run.

Now you need to use your arms and work the hills, let gravity do the work on the downhills don’t fight it. Shorten your stride up, lengthen on the way down. It is 1 mile from the aid station at the end of the trail, where you come out on the campground road; splash a cup of water in your face, take a sip or two of another and focus on the crowd at the end of the road and go. When you get to the hill taking you down to the boat launch let er rip all the way home - that is about 500m.

DUATHLON - 2.5k run, 12mi. bike 5k run

Run - Bike - Run: here we go for the folks who would rather not swim:

Starting out under the duathlon start flag you will head out up the hill to the 2.5k turnaround point, head back down the hill and into the transition area for the bike discipline.  Then following your two loops on the bike you will transition back to the final run.  Then following the sprint 5k course to finish it all off.
